Filipinos are Racist

Browsing CNN’s website during my break, I came across an article that I unfortunately was no longer able to comment on.

I was surprised to find out that my own country was said to have been supportive of McCain over Obama.

1. I support Obama.

2. My mother and grandmother, both of whom are educators, also support Obama.

3. My friends at work, also educators, support Obama.

4. A great majority (something like 27 out of 30) of my students said they would vote for Obama given the chance.

I have no idea why anyone in this country would support McCain apart from one laughable, tragic, yet unfortunately true reason: We’re racist.

I heard of the story of a relative who lives in America who said he supports McCain. He mentioned that this was because New York had a black mayor once, and it was in a mess then.

So wait. Because Obama is black, he’ll make a mess of America? I dare you to find more racist logic than that.

It’s a stinging, vicious irony to me because we Filipinos are among the most mixed people in the world. We’re not like the other Southeast Asians at all because of the power of our colonial pasts. Heck, look at our names: Western first names, Hispanic surnames. Racism is bad enough on its own, but I just find it utterly discombobulating that Filipinos are racist as can get. In fact, we’re so racist, we’re racist against ourselves!

(Of course, the irony goes back to me again, calling people racist because of their race! I’m aware of that, of course.)

Anyway, why do we support Obama?

Frankly, we’re tired of the aggressive white guy dropping bombs on countries he cannot understand. We don’t want fighters anymore. We need someone who can bridge the gap. I think that if America stands for unity in the midst of diversity (a lofty goal our own country can’t even achieve even if we’re mostly of the same race), then I think Obama is the ideal symbol of that unity.

  1. yeah… true. Filipinos are racist.

  2. the funny thing is that Obama is half white, was raised in ‘white environments’, went to wealthy white schools and universities, is absolutely personally wealthy from much of the same defense contractor and oil companies as all the white guys that people are so afraid of.

But there is one thing that upsets me…. that other people are worried about the American election. Excuse me, but Americans created Americas wealth. Not germans and filipinos. Filipinos should have zero concern about american politics until they can stop breeding themself stupid and voting in one corrupt politician after another.

  3. 100% racist they are towards the brown / black skin because of their crazy obsession with the white skin. The problem is that they are wannabes to the White American culture that they have forgotten their own amazing culture. Because Philippines was an occupied territory of the US for almost a century that the people ended up thinking that their country is just another (White)American state and every other skin color is inferior to them. I have personally witnessed this racism and it was sickening.

  4. I noticed that as well. I am not surprised because I knew this long time ago from other incidents. I am Sri Lankan. Many Indians and sri Lankans are racists as well. So are many Cubans in Miami. Due to their own insecurity and eagerness to be accepted by the Westerners, they want to step on the blacks and feel good. That is all. But, the Indians, Fillipinos and Sri Lnakans who have sufficient self esteem and confidence definitely do not feel the need for approval or acceptance by the westerners. Also, many whites who are secured and confident have no problem treating blacks or any race equally just like the secured peple from any race.

  5. Maybe they support McCain because they’re conservative, which has nothing to do with race. There are people who aren’t obsessed with race to the point of derangement, you know. My fiancée is a Pinay who is proud to be brown, Catholic, and conservative. I’m the same, except I’m white. Neither of us have any issue with race or ethnicity — we just lean right politically. And we don’t freak out because people don’t share our beliefs either.
